Sonu Nigam vents his ire on Besharam producers
Now this piece of development did catch many unaware. Though occasionally one does see a disgruntled director or an actor getting frustrated with the way a producer treats his or her film, it is pronto brushed under the carpet. However, those associated with Sooper Se Ooper, a satire featuring Vir Das, has seen Sonu Nigam venting his anger. "On Saturday morning, he pulled up Reliance Entertainment, the corporate house backing the film, for giving a step-motherly treatment to the film," informs a source, "He felt totally dejected that after promoting some recent disasters like Besharam and David so aggressively, Reliance just didn't seem interested in Sooper Se Ooper." Considering the fact that Reliance had gone all out in hyping up their recent production Besharam (which has turned out to be a disaster no less), Sonu's ire isn't entirely baseless. "He has a good reason to feel this way," the source continues, "He has not just sung but also composed music for the film. However, even though the film is just 10 days away, none of the songs are out and the music is just not being promoted. Worse, the music company hasn't even got a go ahead from the producers to release the album." No wonder, Sonu's outburst was pointed as he minced no words. His tweets read, "Am amused that the Studio who has the film has done nothing to promote it. It's sad that people who invested so much money in all their recent flops, have shown their back to a film that shows so much prospect. We put our heart & soul, even our own money for the film and Reliance Entertainment, having released duds like Besharam, David, etc. shamelessly kills our film." He added, "There is such awesome music in Sooper Se Ooper. Movie's concept allowed us to break free from the cliche. Pity that the people who own it are aborting their own child. Wish Reliance had the vision to make use of all that they got for literally nothing. The film is releasing on the 25th and even the songs are not on air yet. T-Series says they are yet to receive the letter of consent from Reliance Entertainment to allow publicity. Aisa kabhi hota hai kya? Shame." Will this change anything? Well, we highly suspect, though it is good to see some celebrity of high standing getting up and sharing what he felt at heart. Note: Incidentally, Sonu has sung 'Tu Hai' for Besharam, which wasn't promoted either!

Dhoom 3 song gets Katrina Aamir YRF and Sameer into trouble
The veteran lyricist Sameer Anjaan who has been penning successful lyrics for 30 years is in the eye of a litigation storm. The Madariya Sufi community has sent a legal notice to actors Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif, producers Yash Raj Films and lyricist Sameer Anjan for the song Malang in Dhoom 3. The community has apparently accused the song of hurting its religious sentiments. But Sameer who has in the past written lucid songs like 'Nazar Ke Saamne' (Aashiqui), 'Tum Paas Aaye' (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai) and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' says he is proud of the 'Malang' song. "These sort of litigations and legal troubles just before the release of a film have become a way of troubling filmmakers unnecessarily. Just see what the people behind Ram-Leela had to go through. Even I was pulled up unnecessarily for an earlier song 'Anarkali Disco Chali' in Housefull 2. There was legal action against that song with people arguing that Anarkali was a historical figure." 'Malang', says Sameer, is a sublime song. "It cannot hurt anyone. It's a beautiful and pure Sufi love song. But the matter has gone legal for no reason. So many crores from minority communities exist without any objection to what is being created. It's only one person who gets up and decides to become the self-appointed spokesperson of the community." The prolific lyricist recalls an earlier song-trouble. "I had written a song called 'Kahan Raja Bhoj Kahaan Gangu Teli' in the Govinda-Raveena starrer Dulhe Raja. The teli community from Lucknow got up to make a claim of defamation over the lyrics. That phrase 'Kahan Raja Bhoj'... has existed as an adage for generations. No one raised an eyebrow against it until my song became a hit." Sameer calls for stringent rules against nuisance litigation. "This sort of arm-twisting when a film is on the verge of release is extremely stressful. It must be stopped. Otherwise it would become impossible for the entertainment industry. Filmmakers, technicians, story writer and song writers are unnecessarily hassled. The entire artistic community is stifled by this atmosphere of intolerance. I've to think a dozen times over every word I use ensuring that nothing hurts any community. How can we function in this vitiated atmosphere?' Getting back to the 'Malang' song, Sameer protests against the last-minute protests. "There is nothing even remotely offensive or derogatory in the song. It's not as if the word 'Malang' has been used in an offensive or chalu manner. And do you think an artiste like Aamir Khan would participate in a song that hurts any religion or community?" About his longevity as a lyricist Sameer says, "It isn't easy at all. The whole atmosphere has changed in the entertainment industry. I've to be very careful with my branding. As it is I am being considered too old to write young songs. The best thing is to fight such prejudice with your work. I wrote 'Chaar Baj Gaye Party Abhi Baqi Hai' in FALTU. People were shocked." Defending the music composers with whom he collaborated so successfully in the past, Sameer says, "If you don't give Nadeem-Shravan, Anand-Milind or Anu Malik work, how would you know what kind of work they can do?" Sameer's two daughters are not interested in song-writing. Hopefully Sameer's son would grow up to take over the mantel of of his grandfather Anjaan and father Sameer Anjaan. Warns Sameer, "My son, if one day he decides to become a lyricist, would have to face immense skepticism. When I started out everyone said my father wrote all my lines." Sameer is doing the songs for Himesh Reshammiya's Xposed. He has also written a song for Salman Khan in Jai Ho. "It's a beautiful love song 'Tere Naina Bade Qatil Maar Hi Dalenge'. I hope no one objects to that saying it encourages murderous thoughts."

Last minute song added to Bullett Raja
The masala-quotient in Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullett Raja has gone up, A new mast-mast massy song 'Jai Govinda Jai Gopala' sung by Wajid, one of the composer duo Sajid-Wajid, has been added on at the last minute to the film. The last-minute inclusion of the song led to a critical final-hour delay in the dispatch of prints to overseas and non-overseas centers which had the producers Fox Star biting their nails in suspense. But Tigmanshu was adamant. When asked why he insisted on the last-minute inclusion of a song, the director said, "It has been added to the end-credits. We all felt that the song's presence would create an impact during the film's final phase of closure. The song had already been recorded. But we hadn't used it. I felt it fitted in at the end. So I put it into the end credits. It did cause some delay. But I think it was worth taking the chance. When you see the film you'll agree with me." Kareena Kapoor saw Bullett Raja recently. She laughed clapped and cheered so hard that the very proper decorous Saif had to ask her to calm down.

Song of Singh Saab The Great faces censor issues
Censor Board, which has currently imposed strict laws for songs and films that may be too titillating for the small screen, has raised an objection over one of the songs of Singh Saab The Great. Recently, a similar issue was faced by Akshay Kumar starrer Boss for their song 'Party All Night' where a few words of the song were considered offensive. Now, Singh Saab The Great is facing similar trouble over its song 'Palang Thod'. Apparently, according to the directive, the song is not suitable for national television viewing. The lyrics of the song go something like, 'Khaike palang tod paan, Tune le li meri jaan, Haari haari main haari, Chal hat beimaan'. It is a special dance number picturised on Sunny Deol, Simran Khan and Prakash Raj. Director of Singh Saab The Great is miffed with the Board's decision since the filmmaker was not allowed to release this song during Diwali when he had decided to cash in on the festive TRPs. The director also alleged that they are being targeted since songs with worse lyrics have been given a clean chit by the Censor Board.

Bappi Lahiri sings Bengali song in Gunday
In what appears to be the first of its kind, Yash Raj Films' Gunday will have a full Bengali song. And we aren't talking about phrases and sentences here and there but a full song in Bangla. Composed by the talented Sohail Sen (whose interesting music was an integral part of Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee? and Ali Abbas Zafar's Mere Brother Ki Shaadi) the Bangla song has been sung by Bappi Lahiri and is filmed on Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. Says Sohail Sen, "I can't reveal too much about it. But it's a full-on masti number filmed on Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. Bappi Uncle has sung for both of them." Sohail whose father is veteran music composer Sameer Sen, knows Bappi Lahiri from the time he was a child. Says Sohail, "Since Gunday is set in Kolkata, director Ali Abbas Zafar and I thought that Bappi Uncle would be the right choice for the Bengali track. We not only had a great time recording with him but also learnt a lot from him." Bappi Lahiri who turned 61 this week says he had a whale of a time crooning the Gunday song in Bengali. "It's not often that one gets to sing in one's mother tongue in a Hindi film. The Gunday song was great fun." Bappida has also composed the music and sung a song in a film called Chahe Mujhe Koi Junglee Kahe. "It's produced by the newly-revived Bombay Talkies productions and is directed by Johnny Walker's son Nassir. It's great fun to be working with so many young people. I may be 61 but I don't feel old."
